Geordie Johnson Words & Music:
Geoff Drummond
Dateline: 01/01/1992 : Mildura, Vic
Visiting South Australia for the Barmera Country
Music Festival last year, I spent some time exploring the Murray
River. It was here that I first heard tales of Geordie Johnston,
the legendary river captain and boatbuilder, who in 1855 became
the first man to sail a paddle steamer from Adelaide to Albury,
over a thousand miles up the Murray. Australians are, by nature,
entrepreneurial and Geordie Johnston was the epitome of the bloke
who was prepared to "have a go". This song of Geoff's
is a tribute to one of our great pioneers; a man of whom too many
Australians are largely unaware. From "Laughter
Like A Shield" 1993 (now only available as a customburn
from master $5.00 with the purchase of any other album)
